Making Siraj the skipper looks like a great strategic move for a side that hasn’t been doing well in the domestic circuit over the years.

Of course, Mohammed Siraj brings international experience and is a quality red-ball bowler for the Indian side, especially in overseas conditions. His hunger to perform in every format makes him one of the toughest bowlers to face.

The question, however, is whether Mohammed Siraj will be available for the entire season for Hyderabad, given his commitments with the national side. In particular, his involvement with the Test team, as well as the possibility of being selected for the white-ball formats, could affect his availability, especially with India’s packed schedule over the next 6-7 months.
Why Siraj Could Lead Hyderabad Only in the First Leg
With southpaw Tilak Varma almost certain to be part of India’s T20I side for the upcoming five-match series against the West Indies at home, which gets underway on October 6, he is also likely to be picked for the five-match away T20I series against New Zealand, which begins on October 22. Therefore, Mohammed Siraj’s appointment as Hyderabad captain makes sense.
Hyderabad’s First Four Games Could Help Siraj Prepare for New Zealand Tests
Hyderabad will begin their Ranji Trophy 2026-27 campaign against Tripura on October 11 and will play their first set of matches in Elite Group B against Andhra, Punjab and Chhattisgarh before the competition takes a break for domestic white-ball tournaments such as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
These four matches could serve as useful preparation for Mohammed Siraj ahead of India’s away two-match Test series against New Zealand, which begins on November 19.
Siraj’s National Commitments Could Force Hyderabad to Change Captain
When the Ranji Trophy resumes in January, Hyderabad will play against Assam, Karnataka and Saurashtra. However, Siraj might not be available for the second leg of the tournament, as he could be part of India’s Test squad for the home five-match Test series against Australia. The historic series begins on January 21.
Appointing Siraj as the skipper is a good strategic move by the HCA. However, they may have to hand over the captaincy to Chama Milind, the current vice-captain, at some point when Siraj departs for his national commitments.
