MA Chidambaram Stadium is set to host a historic Big Bash League (BBL) match later this year, as the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will face off in the opening game of the 16th edition of the tournament. The marquee fixture is scheduled for December 12 and will begin in the afternoon (IST).
After months of discussions and negotiations with senior BCCI officials, the BBL organisers finally received approval to stage a match in India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The announcement was made during a special event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Hosting a BBL match in India marks a significant milestone in the league’s expansion and is also expected to strengthen the sporting and cultural relationship between India and Australia.
Alistair Dobson, Executive General Manager of the Big Bash Leagues, said: “Our focus is making sure this is a great event that’s a true reflection of the BBL. We want people in Australia watching on television to feel like they’re watching a genuine BBL game, while also giving fans in Chennai and across India the unique BBL experience.”
December is typically one of the wettest months in Chennai, and the organisers will be hoping the weather stays clear and doesn’t overshadow this historic occasion.
