On Monday, October 19, 2026, history was made after 78 years as 29-year-old Mizoram batter Chinmay Suthar became the second Indian batter to score 400* runs in a single innings in first-class cricket.
Chinmay Suthar Creates History With Unbeaten 400* in Ranji Trophy
During the Plate Group Ranji Trophy match against Nagaland at the Nagaland Cricket Association Ground in Sovima, Suthar achieved this incredible milestone by scoring an unbeaten 400* off 517 deliveries as Mizoram declared their innings at 581 for 9 on Day 2. His remarkable innings included 46 fours and seven sixes.

Walking in at No. 3 for Mizoram, Suthar remained unbeaten on 180* at the end of Day 1. He took his innings to another level on the second day, adding a further 220 runs to script history.
Bhausaheb Nimbalkar was the first Indian to score 400 runs in a first-class innings. He scored an unbeaten 443* for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in Pune in 1948.
Former West Indies batter Brian Lara holds the record for the highest individual score in first-class cricket, having scored an unbeaten 501* for Warwickshire against Durham in a county match in 1994. Pakistan’s Hanif Mohammad occupies second place, having scored 499 runs for Karachi against Bahawalpur in a domestic match in Karachi in 1959. The legendary Sir Don Bradman sits third on the list, having scored an unbeaten 452* for New South Wales against Queensland in a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1930.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Suthar said, “I just kept batting and wasn’t aware of what the highest score in Ranji was until I got to 380. Suddenly, there were claps from the dressing room. They just heard then it was the second-highest score. That’s when I found out.
“I wanted to play first-class cricket wherever it was, irrespective of the level. Mizoram called me for trials, and it worked. It was a tough decision, but it had to be done.”
