New Zealand recently toured England for a three-match Test series and emerged victorious 2-1. However, the cricketing world, preoccupied with Ben Stokes’ absence, Kane Williamson’s retirement, and wonderkid Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s maiden call-up to the Indian team, largely overlooked the Kiwis’ impressive away-series triumph under the leadership of Tom Latham.
England may have been without key players Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson for the second Test at The Oval due to off-field issues and injury concerns. However, winning a Test series on foreign soil is always a special achievement for New Zealand. The victory also propelled them to third place in the World Test Championship standings with a points percentage (PCT) of 72.22.
The 2-1 series win would not have been possible without the outstanding performances of New Zealand’s seamers, who claimed 55 of England’s 60 wickets across the three Tests.
The visitors’ decision to field an all-seam attack for most of the series paid rich dividends. Led by Matt Henry and well supported by Nathan Smith, Will O’Rourke, Kyle Jamieson, Zak Foulkes, and Ben Sears, the pace attack consistently troubled the English batting lineup. Remarkably, New Zealand bowled England out twice in every Test of the series.
While the batting unit played its part, it was the fast bowlers who stood out throughout the tour, helping New Zealand secure a Test series victory in England for the first time in five years.
Matt Henry’s Remarkable Performance in the Second Test Set the Tone
As the leader of the pace attack, Matt Henry rose to the occasion in the second Test, registering figures of 5 for 80 in the first innings and 6 for 29 in the second, helping New Zealand secure a commanding 253-run victory.
His spell on the final day proved decisive as he dismantled the English batting lineup in quick succession, claiming 5 wickets for just 4 runs in 6.1 overs. Henry finished the series with 12 wickets in the two Tests he played and, in the process, became the ninth New Zealand bowler to surpass 150 Test wickets.
Unheralded Nathan Smith Makes His Mark
The 27-year-old Nathan Smith has become an integral part of New Zealand’s Test setup since making his debut against England in 2024. After taking seven wickets in his first two Tests against England, he continued his dominance against the same opposition by finishing as the leading wicket-taker of the series with 16 wickets, earning New Zealand’s Player of the Series award.
Although he does not possess express pace, Smith relied on disciplined line and length, consistently hitting the right areas to trouble the English batters.
Will O’Rourke Provides Excellent Support
Standing 6 ft 4 in tall, Will O’Rourke showcased his potential in English conditions by picking up 10 wickets in three Tests. He bowled the second-most overs for New Zealand in the series (80.5) and was the visitors’ second-most economical bowler after Matt Henry, conceding runs at just 3.16 per over.
Kyle Jamieson Makes a Strong Return
Kyle Jamieson, whose career has been plagued by injuries, made an impressive return to Test cricket after a two-year absence. He claimed 10 wickets in two matches against England, including best figures of 5 for 62.
He also contributed with the bat, scoring 91 runs in four innings at an average of 30.33. Jamieson was rested for the third Test to manage his workload as he continued his recovery from a back injury.
They still have sufficient bench strength, including Ben Sears and Blair Tickner, who are always ready to grab any opportunity that comes their way.
