A surprise announcement emerged from the Chennai Super Kings camp a few weeks ago: the franchise parted ways with its long-serving head coach, Stephen Fleming, who helped the team win five IPL titles and two Champions League trophies.
Many believed CSK’s decision was influenced by the team’s failure to qualify for the IPL playoffs for the third consecutive season. However, there was a different reason behind Fleming’s departure. The former New Zealand captain was preparing to take over as England Men’s Head Coach, and it became official on Thursday when the ECB announced that he would assume the role after England’s home Test series against Pakistan.
With the position now vacant, the CSK management must find a suitable replacement. The franchise is actively searching for someone who understands the team’s culture, dynamics, and requirements.
Several candidates have emerged as frontrunners for the role of head coach of CSK, one of the most decorated franchises in cricket with a massive global fan base.
Will the management appoint an external candidate, or will they promote one of the assistant coaches who have served the franchise for several years?
A similar situation unfolded in the SA20, where Albie Morkel was promoted to the role of head coach of Joburg Super Kings on Thursday after serving as assistant coach under Stephen Fleming for the past four seasons.
Top Contenders for the Chennai Super Kings Head Coach Role
Michael Hussey
The former Australian batter, known as Mr.Cricket, represented Chennai Super Kings in six seasons between 2008 and 2013, and again in 2015. He has also served as the team’s batting coach since 2018.
Having been both a player and a member of the support staff, Hussey knows the franchise inside out. More importantly, he shares a strong working relationship with MS Dhoni, who continues to play an influential role in the team’s decision-making process.
Hussey’s cricketing knowledge is highly regarded, and he is known for his ability to get the best out of players. His clear communication skills and straightforward approach are among his biggest strengths as a coach.
Looking at CSK’s history, individuals who have previously represented the franchise as players and later joined the support staff have often been entrusted with greater responsibilities. Hussey fits that profile perfectly. He is highly respected by both current and former CSK players, which strengthens his case for the head coach position.
He also possesses an impressive coaching résumé. Hussey worked as a batting consultant for the England men’s team during their successful ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign in 2022. He has also served as a consultant and advisor for Australia and South Africa during the 2015 Cricket World Cup and the 2016 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, respectively.
Currently, he is the head coach of Welsh Fire in The Hundred, a role he has held since 2023.
Rahul Dravid
One of cricket’s true gentlemen, Rahul Dravid needs no introduction. Having been a prominent figure in Indian cricket for more than three decades, Dravid possesses an exceptional understanding of the game.
He guided India to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2024 and has previously served as both coach and mentor of Rajasthan Royals, as well as head coach of Delhi Capitals. Beyond franchise cricket, Dravid played a crucial role in developing India’s next generation of cricketers, guiding the India Under-19 team to the 2016 ICC Under-19 World Cup final and the 2018 title.
With such a diverse coaching background, Dravid is a strong contender for the Chennai Super Kings head coach role.
An additional factor working in his favour is his long association with India Cements, where he served as an employee and vice-president for nearly two decades. India Cements owned the CSK franchise until 2015 before it was demerged into Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited.
Dravid last served as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals during the 2025 IPL season before parting ways with the franchise. If CSK are looking for an Indian coach with a proven track record of nurturing talent and managing elite teams, Dravid would be an excellent fit.
