Cricket in the USA is blooming with the advent of franchise cricket, and we have seen plenty of stars moving away from their home countries to explore opportunities in cricket’s new market. Cricket is still not the country’s primary sport, yet stars are emerging thanks to the introduction of Major League Cricket in 2023.
The USA Cricket Team defeated Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and came close to beating hosts India in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. These performances at the highest level show that there are potential cricketers in the country who deserve recognition.
Indian-origin cricketers such as Monank Patel, Saurabh Netravalkar, and Sanjay Krishnamurthi are immensely talented, but another name that stands out is South African-born player Andries Gous.
Who Is Andries Gous?
Andries Gous was born in Welkom, South Africa, on November 24, 1993. He made his first-class debut in 2012 for Free State during the CSA Provincial Three-Day Challenge. Gous also represented South Africa U-19 in age-group cricket.
He is a natural stroke-maker who bats at the top of the order and is also an exceptional wicketkeeper.
Andries Gous Made an Instant Impact on the Biggest Stage
Gous moved to the USA in 2021 after signing a contract to play cricket in the country. He made his international debut against Canada before the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and announced himself on the biggest stage with back-to-back half-centuries.
He then had a terrific tournament with the bat in the T20 World Cup, finishing as the leading run-scorer for the USA with 219 runs in six matches at an average of 43.80 and a strike rate of 151.03.
In that competition, he played a key role in the USA’s historic victory over Pakistan, scoring 35 runs off 26 balls.
In 27 T20Is for the USA, Gous has scored 770 runs at an average of 30.80 and a strike rate of 142.85. He has also recorded six scores of more than 50 in his career.
Gous’ Excellent Numbers in Major League Cricket
Andries Gous didn’t have the best numbers in the first two seasons of Major League Cricket in 2023 and 2024, scoring 142 and 153 runs, respectively. However, he showed significant improvement in the 2025 season, scoring 216 runs at a strike rate of 139.35.
Gous had a breakthrough season in the 2026 Major League Cricket, hammering 547 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 165.25.
He recorded the highest score by an American player in the tournament when he smashed 132 runs off 51 balls for Washington Freedom against MI New York in the Eliminator.
In the same game, he stitched together a whopping 241-run partnership for the third wicket with Steven Smith, as Washington Freedom completed a record chase of 266 with six wickets in hand and eight balls to spare.
Records in Other T20 Leagues
Andries Gous played a stunning knock in the final of the inaugural ETPL 2026, helping Edinburgh Castle Rockers lift the title with an unbeaten 90* off 61 balls against Belfast Wolves.
He finished the tournament as the fifth-highest run-scorer, amassing 301 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 128.08.

Apart from Major League Cricket and ETPL, Gous has also featured in other notable T20 leagues, including the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), ILT20, and Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Which IPL Team Might Be Interested in Andries Gous?
Andries Gous has a connection with the Knight Riders franchise, having previously represented their teams in the ILT20 and CPL. The management could have an eye on him given his impressive form.
If he gets picked, he will become only the second USA cricketer after Ali Khan to earn an IPL contract.
Ali Khan was picked up by KKR in 2020 as an injury replacement for England seamer Harry Gurney. Khan represented Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL from 2019 to 2025, and that connection helped him secure an IPL deal.
With Gous’ impressive performances across T20 leagues and his growing experience at the international level, IPL franchises could certainly keep a close eye on the USA star.
