It was Saturday, July 13, 2002. In the NatWest Series Final against England at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s, India created history by defeating the hosts by a thrilling two-wicket margin.
Sourav Ganguly, India’s captain at the time, had endured a series of heartbreaks in tournament finals. Unable to contain his emotions after the historic triumph, he famously took off his shirt and waved it from the Lord’s balcony, creating one of the most iconic celebrations in cricket history.
Now, 24 years later, that unforgettable moment is set to be recreated on the big screen. The first look of the biopic based on one of India’s most decorated captains, “Dada: The Sourav Ganguly Story,” has been unveiled. Starring Rajkummar Rao in the lead role, the film is scheduled to hit theatres on May 14, 2027.
The announcement was made on the occasion of Sourav Ganguly’s 54th birthday.
The film is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg, while the cinematography has been handled by the talented Siddharth Diwan.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly also took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his excitement, posting:
“Best gift ever! Can’t wait to see you play my cover drive! #RajkummarRao.”
It turned out to be a double celebration for Dada on his 54th birthday, as he was also inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, becoming the 10th Indian cricketer to receive the prestigious honour.
