Zaheer Khan, the poster boy of Indian cricket in the 2000s and a key player in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph, has been appointed as Chennai Super Kings’ new head coach.
Michael Hussey and Eoin Morgan were considered the front-runners to take up the Chennai Super Kings coaching role following the departure of Stephen Fleming. However, in a surprise move, the franchise has announced former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as its new head coach.
Zaheer Khan becomes only the third head coach of Chennai Super Kings. Kepler Wessels, who represented both South Africa and Australia, served as the team’s coach in the inaugural edition in 2008, while former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming had the longest association with the franchise as a coach, from 2009 to 2026, before taking up the England men’s Test coaching role.
Why Did Chennai Super Kings Choose Zaheer Khan as Their New Head Coach?
MS Dhoni did not play a single game in IPL 2026, yet his influence within the team has not diminished. He remains involved in the team’s decision-making process, and it is no surprise that CSK have enjoyed a strong track record in the Indian Premier League.
Dhoni backed Ruturaj Gaikwad as his successor to take the team forward, and he himself was instrumental in Zaheer Khan’s appointment as Chennai Super Kings’ new head coach.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said, “It was not an administrative decision. The cricket committee decided this. It was MS’s suggestion. He spoke to Ruturaj Gaikwad, and both had a discussion with owner Rupa (Gurunath), and thus the decision was arrived at.”
The decision to appoint an Indian coach could prove significant for the franchise, which has failed to qualify for the Playoffs in the past three seasons.
Zaheer Khan understands the Indian cricket ecosystem and commands huge respect among players in the country. Having played alongside MS Dhoni for India in 164 matches across formats, the two share a strong understanding of the game. Their familiarity could also make communication and decision-making easier within the franchise.
Zaheer Khan’s Previous Coaching Resume
It is a bold decision to appoint Zaheer Khan, who has never previously served as a head coach in the Indian Premier League. However, the former Indian left-arm seamer served as Director of Cricket Operations and later as Global Head of Cricket Development at Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2022, during which the franchise won back-to-back IPL titles in 2019 and 2020.
He also served as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants during the 2025 season.
Challenges Lie Ahead for Zaheer Khan
The biggest task for incoming coach Zaheer Khan will be to reorganise a team combination that has failed to click over the past three years, with CSK missing out on the Playoffs in each of those seasons.
Zaheer Khan will need to work closely with the analysts and put together a strong strategy for the mini-auction, which is expected to be staged later this year or early next year. Deciding whom to retain and whom to release will be one of his biggest challenges before the auction.
He will initially join the CSK franchise on a one-year contract, and it remains to be seen whether the management extends his stay for a few more years to give him a longer run despite the results.
Zaheer Khan Has Extensive Experience at the International Level and in the IPL
Appointing an Indian coach is a bold move by CSK, with the franchise seemingly believing that Zaheer Khan understands the team dynamics better than other candidates. His experience with the Indian team, as well as multiple IPL franchises, could prove valuable for CSK.
He represented India in 309 matches across formats during a career that spanned 14 years, from 2000 to 2014. He was one of the most successful fast bowlers India has produced, finishing with 610 wickets across the three formats.
Zaheer Khan also represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals in the IPL between 2008 and 2017, taking 102 wickets in 100 matches.
